I have no idea how I got the flu, but I did and it was ugly. Is it only coincidence that a few days later Zoe is struggling with diarrhea and hiding under my bed (which she does when she doesn’t feel good)?

This is an ongoing problem with Zoe. We spent $2000 on her gastrointestinal issues when we lived in Manhattan and she since, seems to be constantly plagued with stomach issues. Her vet gives her Metronidazole which is an antibiotic that seems to work in the short term. I can’t help wondering if her current illness stems from mine?

Zoe is my skittish dog. She is afraid of her shadow and even the slightest upset sends her terrified under the bed. I feel horrible about this. If I ever raise my voice, yell, even laugh too loud – off she goes to hide. I also think she hides when she doesn’t feel well since she does seems to have some stomach issues. But more often than not, she hides under the bed for no apparent reason. Turns out, there are several reasons why dogs like to hide under the bed.

Avoidance – It is difficult to estimate how many words a family pet can recognize. It is quite possible that a dog may associate unsavory events with specific words. Telling a dog it is going to get a bath or that it’s time to go see the vet may make the staunchest of canines duck under the bed.

Contentment – Dogs are den animals, and are very comfortable in small spaces where they can burrow to feel safe and content.

Fear – Loud yelling, music, doors slamming, fireworks and the sound of a vaccuum cleaner may all contribute to a dog seeking safety under a bed.

Illness – It is quite common for a dog to hide under a bed when it is not feeling well, preferring to suffer alone. The animal should be taken in for veterinary care if the hiding behavior persists.

Phobias – Lightening and thunder can be particularly agonizing and stressful for dogs. Some dogs pace nervously, others bark at the rumbling and lightening flashes, and others seek shelter under the bed.

I’ve been in that situation before where I’ve come across an animal that needs help and no matter how many organizations I called to get help – I’ll often get the run around. So I reprinted the information she gave me on my blog and was pleased to get a call from the Dog Warden bright and early the next day. He assured me that he was going to look into the situation. I encouraged him to let me know how things get resolved, as I wanted to post an update. UPDATE: I just spoke to Deputy Smith of the Lake County Dog Wardens office. She has confirmed that they investigated the situation and that the dogs are living in good health and living conditions. She went onto say that the dogs are licensed, vetted, etc.

In the meantime, I’ve received some emails defending the owner. According to them, the dog warden and local rescue group have investigated and saw no problem with the dog(s) or the living conditions. I am hearing that from one side of the story, but the original story was from only one side as well so it’s only fair to publish everyone’s point of view. Besides, I’d rather report a false alarm vs. an abuse story anyway. UPDATE: .. and the good news is that the dogs are fine.

I’ve taken down the original post until I can an update from everyone involved. I do take some comfort that calls were answered and the situation was looked into soon after I posted the information. If the post had anything to do with that, then great!
